Why the numbers differ
  • Question wording: Gallup asks a yes-or-no question about feeling safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live. The ESS asks how safe you feel, or would feel, walking alone in this area after dark, with four answers, and this page counts "very safe" and "safe" together.
  • Sample frames: Gallup usually interviews about 1,000 people aged 15 and older per country, by phone or face to face, and leaves out some areas (often insecure or remote regions) and, in Gulf states, people who cannot answer in the interview languages. The ESS interviews random samples of people aged 15 and older living in private households. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
  • Women and men answer very differently. Gallup reports that in 2024 67% of women and 78% of men worldwide said they feel safe, a gap of 11 points, with a gap of 10 points or more in 104 of 144 countries. In the United States the gap is 26 points (58% of women feel safe); in Italy 44% of women and 76% of men do. A country's overall share depends on how these groups are weighted. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
  • Timing: Gallup's figures come from interviews in 2024; ESS Round 11 interviews ran from 2023 into 2024.
  • Numbeo's Safety Index is built from answers by self-selected website visitors over five years and is a score, not a share of people, so it is shown for reference and not counted.
Common mistakes
  • Feeling safe is not the same as low crime. How safe people feel depends on more than crime, and a country can rank high on feeling safe while recording many homicides, or the reverse. Compare it with recorded crime, such as the homicide rate, before drawing conclusions. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
  • Numbeo's Safety Index is not the share of people who feel safe. It is a 0-100 score built from website visitors' answers. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
