People registered by the police as suspects of at least one crime (misdrijf) in the year, per 100,000 residents who are born in the Netherlands, both parents born in the Netherlands.

CBS table rows: 59,460 suspects in 2025 (counts rounded by CBS); 50 per 10,000 as published.

OData: https://opendata.cbs.nl/ODataApi/OData/85658NED. CBS publishes rates as whole numbers per 10,000 residents of the group; RealStats multiplies by 10, so values are multiples of 10 and carry up to 5 per 100,000 of rounding. Suspects not in the population register (BRP) are in the counts but not in the rates.

4 of 5 checks
  • Yes: Method and definitions published. CBS defines suspects, offence groups, origin groups and income bands in the table's metadata.
  • Yes: Official statistics or peer-reviewed. Official statistics from Statistics Netherlands (CBS): the police register BVH linked to the population register (BRP).
  • Yes: Full count or representative sample. Every person the police registered as a suspect of a crime (misdrijf) in the year, counted once; not a sample.
  • Yes: Raw data downloadable. The full table is downloadable through CBS's open OData API.
  • No: No known break or quality problem. CBS states the provisional 2024 and 2025 figures are a few percent below the final count; CBS changed the origin classification and the counting method in 2024 and recalculated the series back to 2010.

Why the numbers differ (7)
  • Age and sex. Young men are registered far more often than other people, and the groups differ in age. In CBS's own breakdown for 2025, among men aged 18 to 22 the rates were 2,120, 3,830, 6,710 and 3,000 per 100,000 for people born in the Netherlands to two Dutch-born parents, with one parent born abroad, with two parents born abroad, and people born abroad; among women of the same age 400, 670, 770 and 340. These are published rates for each age and sex group, not an adjustment. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Income bands cover only part of each group. Suspects in households without a full year of income (for example recent arrivals, students on student finance and people not in the population register) are in neither band. In 2023 that was 9,000 of 66,790 suspects born in the Netherlands to Dutch-born parents, 4,300 of 20,620 with two parents born abroad and 28,100 of 50,740 born abroad. CBS rounds the income-band counts to hundreds. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Counts and rates cover different people. Suspects who are not in the population register (for example visitors and people without a registered address) are in CBS's counts but not in its rates; in 2025, 1,220 suspects had no known country of origin and are counted only in the total and among people born abroad. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Old and new classification. The discontinued table counted people born abroad with two Dutch-born parents as Dutch background, put people with one and with two foreign-born parents together as the second generation, and estimated missing suspects registered by the Royal Marechaussee. For 2022 it gives 610 per 100,000 for Dutch background against 620 in the current table for people born in the Netherlands to two Dutch-born parents, and 1,190 for the first generation against 1,160 for people born abroad. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • CBS's yearly integration report expresses the same register as a percentage of residents aged 12 and over, so its figures differ slightly from the StatLine rates per 10,000 residents used here. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • A registered suspect is a person the police have reasonable grounds to suspect of a crime; CBS notes that not every suspect will be found guilty, and that some cases are dropped or settled by the prosecutor.
  • Registration also depends on whether a crime is reported and on where the police look, which can differ between offence types and places.
Common mistakes (4)
  • Reading suspects as offenders or convicts. These are people registered as suspects by the police in the year, counted once each however many crimes they were suspected of. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Comparing groups across the two classifications. The current table starts in 2010; the old one ended in 2022 with different groups and a different method, so its lines are kept apart. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Treating origin as citizenship. CBS's origin groups are defined by the person's and the parents' country of birth, not by nationality. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Reading a rate as the share of a group that commits crime. Most people in every group were not registered as a suspect in the year: the highest rate on this page, 6,120 per 100,000, is a few percent of the group. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
Context (4)
Sources considered and not used (5)
  • Sexual offences in the current suspect table (CBS 85658NED): Not published separately: CBS counts all sexual offences inside the violent-crime group. Sexual offences by origin are shown only from the discontinued table, which ends in 2022. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • CBS 85656NED, registrations of suspects by nationality: Counts registrations by nationality, not people by birthplace or origin, so it answers a different question. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Education breakdown of CBS 85658NED: Left out to keep the page to the income question asked; CBS publishes it in the same table from 2013. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Arrested suspects (aangehouden verdachten) in CBS 81959NED: A different measure, published only to 2014 and dropped from the current tables. (source, retrieved 2026-10-27)
  • Prosecution and court outcomes by origin: Not part of the CBS StatLine suspect tables used here; suspects, people prosecuted and people convicted are different counts and are not mixed on this page.
