Why the numbers differ
- Many countries do not record the relationship between victim and killer, or record it for only some cases. Where most relationships are unknown, the recorded partner or family count is a floor, and a low rate can mean missing information rather than few killings.
- Definitions differ: some national statistics count only current or former partners, some count boyfriends separately, and some count only killings by men; the UN definition covers partners, relatives and household members of either sex.
- Feminicide or femicide as a legal category (as in Mexico and much of Latin America) is not the same as killings by partners and family: it covers gender-related killings by anyone, and partner killings filed under another crime are left out.
- National counts and UNODC can show different years: UNODC publishes what governments report to it, often a year or more after national figures appear.
- UNODC and UN Women estimate that about 50,000 women and girls (44,400 to 55,500) were killed by a partner or family member worldwide in 2024, around 1.2 per 100,000 women and girls. The estimate fills gaps by imputation, from data for 117 countries or territories. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
Common mistakes
- Reading a near-zero UNODC rate as near-zero violence. In some countries, such as Mexico and Colombia, the relationship to the killer is unknown for almost all female victims, so the partner and family count captures only a small part of what happened.
