02024
Registered deaths of women and girls (all ages) with underlying cause assault, ICD-10 X85-Y09, divided by the UN World Population Prospects 2024 female population for 1 July, because WHO's population file has no figure for this year, times 100,000.

Codes used: detailed external-cause codes, none of them assault, so zero assault deaths. Countries that report the condensed Tabulation List 1 contribute its assault item (1102), which covers the same X85-Y09 range; years where a country reports only a total for all external causes have no value. National rows only. Year rule: only WHO has data for this country, so its latest year is used.

Raw files: morticd10_part1-6.zip (0 female assault deaths) and WPP2024_Demographic_Indicators_Medium.csv.gz from UN World Population Prospects 2024 (https://population.un.org/wpp/). WHO publishes the data as the country sent them and does not adjust for incomplete registration. The same file records 0 female deaths of undetermined intent (Y10-Y34) for this year; some of these may be homicides.

4 of 5 checks
  • Yes: Method and definitions published. WHO publishes the file layout, ICD-10 code lists and data notes in its documentation.
  • Yes: Official statistics or peer-reviewed. Official cause-of-death statistics sent to WHO by national authorities.
  • Yes: Full count or representative sample. Civil registration counts every registered, medically certified death, not a sample.
  • Yes: Raw data downloadable. Raw death and population files are free downloads.
  • No: No known break or quality problem. Registered deaths from all causes for 2024 are 84% of the UN World Population Prospects estimate of all deaths; WHO rates death registration 81% complete (assessment of 2008-2019 data).

Which kinds of source measure this number, which years each one published, and where the reporting stops or has holes.

Why the numbers differ
  • They come from two separate systems: UNODC compiles police and criminal justice records of female victims, while the WHO Mortality Database counts death certificates of women and girls with the cause coded as assault (ICD-10 X85-Y09).
  • Both divide by the female population, but UNODC uses UN World Population Prospects figures and WHO uses the population the country reported, so the bases can differ slightly.
  • Where many deaths go unregistered, or many violent deaths are coded as "undetermined intent", the WHO count falls below the police count.
  • Small counts make single-year rates jump. In countries with few female victims a year, one or two deaths change the rate visibly.
Common mistakes
  • A female homicide rate is not a femicide count. It includes every intentional killing of a woman or girl, whatever the motive or the relationship to the perpetrator.
  • The rate per 100,000 women and girls cannot be compared directly with a rate per 100,000 people, which uses the whole population.
